How to make the Most Glorious Shakshouka

The Most Glorious 5-element Shakshouka you will not resist!

This 5-element Shakshouka is so filling and full of flavour that you will make it over and over again! It is definitely one of the comfort foods. It is fantastic for breakfast, and this is how I usually serve it. However, feel free to serve it for lunch, as well. To make the most of it, have it with sourdough bread, flat bread, naan or any other kind of bread to dip in the sauce.

There are many variations of Shakshouka. Primarily, it is a pepper and tomato dish with eggs on top. To make it richer I added onion and garlic and it tasted great, so go ahead and experiment with your favourite vegetables.

The procedure

Warm up a big deep frying pan and add the following ingredients:

  • Sweet 1 tablespoon of oil, 2 medium-sized onions and 1 red bell pepper finely sliced, 2 celery sticks cut into pieces (optional), fry until soft, 1/2 teaspoon of sugar,
  • Pungent 1 finely chopped garlic clove, a pinch of freshly ground black pepper, 1/4 of finely chopped chilli (optional),
  • Salty a generous pinch of sea salt,
  • Sour 2-3 medium-sized tomatoes (if tomatoes are not in season, add 1 can or packet of tomatoes), roughly chopped, a generous pinch of dried basil,
  • Bitter a pinch of thyme.

Mix all the ingredients, cover the frying pan with a lid and fry for about 3-4 minutes until the tomatoes are soft and all the flavours blend.

Using a wooden spoon make 4 pits in the mixture and crack 4 eggs into each one. Cover the pan and let it simmer for another 3-4 minutes until the whites are set and the yolks are still runny.
