Don’t buy your Apple Tart, make it yourself
This 5-element variation of regular apple tart is very simple. It is so easy to make that actually nothing can go wrong in the process. It is crispy and soft and full of flavour, and goes perfectly with Lemon Balm Green Tea.
The ingredients make a tart tin of 27 cm in diameter.
To make the dough
Prepare 125g of butter and 1/3 cup of water. Put both into the freezer for about 30 minutes. After that, sieve 250 grams of plain flour into a large mixing bowl, chop the butter and mix it in. Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt and a third of the water and start mixing with your hands. You may want to squeeze the butter pieces with your fingers to make them smaller but do not worry if there are some lumps in the dough. Keep adding the water until you get dough that does not stick to your hands. Shape it into a ball, wrap into a piece of cling film and put it into the freezer for about 10 minutes.
To make the filling
Use 3-4 medium-sized apples. Wash them, cut into quarters and remove the cores. Slice the quarters and put into a large mixing bowl adding the spices in the following order:
- Sweet the apples,1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 2-3 tablespoons of sugar, mix all the ingredients with your hands rubbing the spices into the apple pieces,
- Pungent 1/2 teaspoon of ginger,
- Salty a pinch of sea salt,
- Sour lemon juice of 1 lemon,
- Bitter 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric.
Mix everything well until all the apple pieces are coated with the spices.
The baking
Grease your tart tin or pie dish with some butter. Take the dough out of the freezer, place it in the middle of the tart tin and flatten it with the base of your hand. Go from the central spot and spread the dough towards the edges. Turn the tart tin around several times to make the dough spread evenly until it reaches the top edge of the tin.
Arrange the apple pieces on the dough. You may want to sprinkle everything with some extra brown sugar, depending how sour your apples are.
Bake in 200℃ with no fan for about 35-40 minutes.
Tastes perfect on its own or with a scoop of 5-element whipped cream.
